The initial inspiration came from shadows reflected on grass. A few months later she came up with a technique that didn't make the subject on canvas as an unflat image. Instead, the object is transformed into a re-creation of itself, where the surface becomes the carrier of it's personal interpretation by painting, particularly in the case of living or perishable items like people or fruit. Her ephemeral painterly style is obvious and what survives in Alexa Meade's art is a photographs. Painting and photography are closely together to produce a flat two-dimensional surface that is trompe l'oeil. Certain places three dimensions are seen, for example, around the eye or on the hair. Meade sometimes incorporates her painted figures within the three-dimensional space that surrounds her. They interact within this self-created universe. In this way, she blurs the lines between painting, photography, performance and installation.
